How Much Rest Between Reps?

Let’s talk about rest in a set because some of you guys take a full state-mandated smoke break between reps.

As loose rule, keep it under 10 seconds.

More practically, just stay with the bar—quit walking away from it.

Ideally keep your hands on it the whole time. You can maintain your grip without really having lower the bar—control it just enough to bring it back to the floor without taking your hands off.

If you’re dropping the bar and then taking 30 seconds to adjust the weights that bounced out, either use collars, or adjust more quickly from inside the plates.

Now, if you rest longer than 10 seconds, does it “not count”? Of course not. It’s still way different and a lot harder than actually doing multiple singles.

It’s just not as effective as what you’re trying to achieve by doing a double or a triple, and having inconsistent rest between reps makes measuring your progress over time less accurate.
