Poliquin Step-Up
AKA Poliquin Step-Down, Poliquin Step
The Poliquin Step-up is a somewhat easier variation of the Petersen step-up.
Stand on a low box or stack of plates with a wedge or similar to elevate the heel of one foot.
Step off forward with the other leg straight and the toes pulled back, reaching the heel to the floor by bending the support knee and keeping the foot against the wedge or support. Control the motion to just lightly tap the heel on the floor and then return to the top.
Support and assist yourself as needed by holding onto a pipe or rack.
Purpose
The Poliquin Step-up is an exercise to strengthen the VMO for knee stability and health, and is easier than its parent exercise, the Petersen step-up, because the support foot is connected to the platform rather than moving up to the balls of the foot, so it can be used as part of a progression to the full Petersen step-up.
Programming
This is a good preparatory exercise for use in a warm-up. 1-2 sets of 8-12 total reps are appropriate.
Variations
The common method of execution is more accurately called a step-down; they can be done as a step up, starting with the heel on the floor, as an introductory version.
